How to Brew Oolong Tea
For the best flavor and aroma, we always recommend using loose leaf oolong tea rather than tea bags. Whole leaves allow the tea to fully expand during steeping, releasing more complex layers of flavor. Tea bags often contain smaller leaf particles, which can result in a flatter, less nuanced cup.
Use a teapot, infuser, or brewing vessel that gives the leaves enough room to unfurl. This is especially important for rolled oolongs, which expand significantly as they steep.
Simple Oolong Brewing Guide
- Start with fresh, cold, filtered water for the cleanest taste
- Heat water to 180–200°F, depending on how light or dark the oolong is
- If you don’t have a temperature-controlled kettle, let boiling water rest for 2–3 minutes before pouring
- Use 2 teaspoons of loose leaf tea per 8 oz of water
- Steep for 2–3 minutes, then taste and adjust to preference
Oolong is naturally forgiving, but it’s best enjoyed with shorter, multiple infusions rather than one long steep. Try re-steeping the same leaves several times—you’ll notice the flavor evolve with each cup as the leaves slowly open and release new layers of aroma and depth.
Keep your tea covered while steeping to retain heat and preserve the aromatic compounds.
With high-quality oolong, each infusion tells a slightly different story—floral and light in the first cup, deeper and more rounded in later steeps.
